What is Recyclemania?
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more.-- from Recyclemaniacs.org
How much we waste
Did you know that the average American throws away 3 and 1/2 pounds of trash each day? (Read more recycling facts here). Our goal during this competition is to cut down on the amount we send to the landfill and raise the amount of recycled material. Additionally, a lot of otherwise-trash at OIT can be composted, such as the takeout boxes and plates from the Marketplace. Place your food trash in the white bins under the plate racks by the Marketplace to send them to a local compost!
What to recycle
Do recycle these:
How to participate
Reuse, Reduce and Recycle! Bins are placed all over campus. The amount OIT recycles is measured and posted here each week. Every bit helps, get competitive! See the list of what can and can't be recycled.
Come to the Recyclemania pledge table in the CU every Tuesday from 12:30 - 2:30 and Wed 12:00-1:00pm to sign a pledge to recycle and get entered in a drawing for Bistro Bucks and other fun prizes.
Remember REDUCE, REUSE and then RECYCLE!
Do not put these in the bins:
Compost food waste and food contaminated plates, cups and containers in the CU Marketplace - ask Marketplace staff if you have any questions on this.
Thank your for your participation!
