Unit 5: Applications of Derivatives 1

Learning Outcome: Use derivatives to solve related rates and rectilinear motion problems.

Performance Criteria:
  1. Solve applied related rates problems.
  2. Analyze rectilinear motion.
  3. Determine the absolute maximum and minimum values of a function, and their locations, on a closed interval.
  4. Given the graph of a function, sketch or identify the graph of the derivative function.
  5. Give the intervals on which a function is increasing or decreasing. Give local maxima and minima and their locations (using the first derivative test).
  6. Give the intervals on which a function is concave up or concave down, apply the second derivative test to identify the locations of local maxima and minima.
  7. Sketch the graph of a function, given information about its first and second derivatives. From the graph of a function, determine where the first and second derivatives are zero, positive, and negative.
  8. Find a point in an interval [a,b] that satisfies the mean value theorem.
